AFL: Storm Stopped By Desperados, 17-2

DALLAS-The Dallas Desperados did not give up an offensive score of any kind and beat the Tampa Bay Storm 17-2 in a Week 9 AFL game.

The Storm punted to start the game, then the Desperados went on an 8-play, 57-yard drive that ended with a 30-yard field goal by Greg Hall to take a 3-0 lead with 8:07 remaining in the first quarter. On Tampa Bay's next drive, Orval Stanley was stripped of the ball by Richie Garner and Theron Jaxon recovered for Dallas at the Storm 43-yard line. Six plays later, Heinie Voorhees threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Elson Gregson to make it 10-0 with 1:06 to go in the first.

The Storm punted, then Gregson would fumble a handoff and Blue Hanan recovered for the Storm at their own 38-yard line. Tampa Bay went three-and-out, then Preacher Kalkman's punt was downed at the Desperados' 2-yard line. Voorhees looked to surprise the Storm with a draw, but Jose Moore met him in the end zone for a safety that made it 10-2 with 11:18 left in the second quarter. The teams traded punts, then Tampa Bay looked to drive for a score. But Johnny Quincey's 54-yard field goal attempt was blocked by Ted Donaldson. After another Dallas punt, the Storm gave Quincey another chance to get the score closer, but his 33-yard field goal attempt went wide.

Punting dominated most of the third quarter. Voorhees would have a pass picked off by Reed Fuller who took it back 21 yards to the Desperados' 49-yard line. But the Storm couldn't capitalize, and Kalkman again stuck Dallas down to their own 2-yard line. The Desperados got out of the end zone this time, but still had to punt the ball away. Early in the fourth, the Storm punted, and it went out-of-bounds at the Tampa Bay 43-yard line. The Desperados would line up for a 53-yard field goal, but the snap went awry, and Herb Manley's pass to Hall fell incomplete. Tampa Bay tried to convert on a fourth-and-2 from the Dallas 34-yard line, but Jefferson Taylor was stuffed at the line. The Desperados punted, then Noland Delta picked off a Stanley pass and raced 31 yards for a touchdown to make it 17-2 with 6:27 to go in the game. Stanley was picked off again, this time by Ardell Edmonds who returned it 27 yards to the Storm 48-yard line. Jean Butler would punt and down the Storm at their own 1-yard line. Tampa Bay would make a desperate attempt to reach the end zone, but Burton Carmon fumbled at the Dallas 15-yard line with 42 seconds left to end the threat.
