AFL: Rush Eke Out Victory Over Sabercats, 14-6

ROSEMONT, IL-The Chicago Rush managed to keep the San Jose Sabercats out of the end zone and won by a score of 14-6 in a Week 7 AFL game.

San Jose got the ball first, and was forced to punt. Panco Rhymer managed to down the kick at the Chicago 2-yard line. The Rush went three-and-out, and Winn Burnett shanked a kick out of bounds to the Rush 23-yard line. Six plays later, the Sabercats faced a 4th-and-1 at the 3-yard line, and settled for a 20-yard field goal by Ethan Wycoff to take a 3-0 lead with 4:36 left in the first quarter. The Rush would be forced to punt, and this time Burnett managed to pin the Sabercats back at their own 2-yard line.

San Jose would punt on their ensuing possession, then Chicago would move the ball 82 yards on 10 plays. Hershel Kimbrell finished it off with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Lonnie Clements to give the Rush a 7-3 lead with 7:57 to go in the second quarter. Punts were traded until late in the half, when San Jose had a chance to score, but time ran out.

Chicago looked to add to their lead early in the third quarter, but Dete Justen missed a 26-yard field goal attempt. San Jose attempted to drive for a score, but were forced to punt. The Rush then drove 81 yards on 16 plays. Kimbrell threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Kale Colby to make it 14-3 with 14:20 remaining in the fourth quarter.

After a Sabercats punt, Chicago tried to put San Jose away, but Justen missed a 52-yard field goal attempt. San Jose went three-and-out, and Rhymer pinned the Rush back to their own 4-yard line. Chicago would punt the ball away, and the Sabercats went from their own 36 to facing a fourth-and-goal from the 1 with 4:02 to go in the game. Andre Stanfill tried to find his way to the end zone but was driven out of bounds at the 2-yard line. The Rush would punt after the two-minute warning, and the Sabercats drove 29 yards on 4 plays. Facing a 4th-and-1 at the Chicago 32-yard line, San Jose opted to take a 49-yard field goal by Wycoff to make it 14-6 with 38 seconds left. An onside kick failed, and the Rush ran out the clock.

Chicago (6-1) gained 266 yards of total offense. The Rush ran for 96 yards on 32 carries. Clements led the team with 67 yards on 18 carries. Kimbrell was 17-of-28 passing for 225 yards and 2 TD. He was sacked six times, losing 55 yards. Colby was the leading receiver with 4 catches for 110 yards and a TD. The Rush host the Dallas Desperados next week.

San Jose (3-4) gained 234 yards of total offense. The Sabercats ran for 68 yards on 18 carries. Alan Sale led the team with 48 yards on 12 carries. Stanfill was 21-of-32 passing for 222 yards. He was sacked seven times, losing 56 yards. Turk Costigan was the leading receiver with 7 catches for 83 yards. The Sabercats visit the Colorado Crush next week.
