AFL: Sabercats Stomp Out Dragons, 36-17

SAN JOSE-The San Jose Sabercats completed the Western Division sweep of the Eastern Division with a 36-17 win over the New York Dragons in a Week 9 AFL game.

The game started out ugly for both offenses, as George Larron of the Dragons fumbled and Erwin Sonn recovered for the Sabercats at the New York 11-yard line. But on the next play, Hack McDonald lost the ball for San Jose and Vance Bicker fell on it for the Dragons at his own 8. The Dragons would turn it over again, when Bo Dicus picked off a Faron Emerson pass at the Dragons 27-yard line. The Sabercats lost a yard on three plays, but Ethan Wycoff would kick a 45-yard field goal to give San Jose a 3-0 lead with 11:16 to go in the first quarter. After a New York punt, the Sabercats would move the ball 59 yards on 9 plays. Wycoff would connect on a 32-yard field goal to make it 6-0 with 5:01 left in the first.

The Dragons got on the board after a 13-play, 52-yard drive. Jose Trust would kick a 28-yard field goal to make it 6-3 with 14:17 to go in the second quarter. The teams would trade punts, then San Jose started to pull away, beginning with a 10-play, 81-yard drive. Andre Stanfill finished it off with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Teddy Stacy making it 13-3 with 3:09 remaining in the half. After a Dragons punt, the Sabercats moved 68 yards on 13 plays. Wycoff would kick a 37-yard field goal with 2 seconds left to take a 16-3 lead into halftime.

The Sabercats got the ball to start the second half, and drove 59 yards on 8 plays. Stanfill tossed a 4-yard touchdown pass to Festus Blanks to make it 23-3 with 11:53 left in the third quarter. After a three-and-out by New York, San Jose benefited from great field position and ended an 8-play, 32-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown run by Scooter Colby making it 30-3 with 7:30 left in the third. Gregory Taylor would pick off Emerson at the Dragons' 24-yard line. After gaining 20 yards on 6 plays, Wycoff would kick a 21-yard field goal to pull San Jose further ahead at 33-3 with 2:53 left in the third quarter.

New York would finally get into the end zone after a 9-play, 66-yard drive. Emerson threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Barry Starr to make it 33-10 with 14:15 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Dragons attempted an onside kick, but McDonald recovered at the New York 48-yard line. After San Jose drove 30 yards on 12 plays, Wycoff would kick a 35-yard field goal to make it 36-10 with 8:39 remaining in the fourth. The Dragons went on a 10-play, 71-yard drive, and Emerson finished it with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Booker Starling to make it 36-17 with 5:38 left in the game. Another onside kick was attempted, and this time McDonald fumbled. Emmett Romine recovered for the Dragons at their own 43-yard line. However, New York was turned away on 4th-and-1 from the San Jose 48-yard line.

San Jose (5-4) gained 349 yards of total offense. The Sabercats ran for 148 yards on 39 carries. Colby led the team with 53 yards on 12 carries and a TD. Stanfill was 17-of-30 passing for 201 yards, 2 TD and was not sacked. Ramon Counce led the receivers with 5 catches for 101 yards. Next week, the Sabercats will visit the Iowa Barnstormers.

New York (2-7) gained 300 yards of total offense. The Dragons ran for 50 yards on 16 carries. Paden Caspar led the team with 18 yards on 7 carries. Emerson was 27-of-49 passing for 258 yards, 2 TD and 2 INT. He was sacked three times, losing 20 yards. Ardell Ashmore led the receivers with 8 catches for 83 yards. Next week, the Dragons will host the Georgia Force.
