AFL: Iowa Beats Orlando, 23-2

DES MOINES-The Iowa Barnstormers dominated the Orlando Predators from start to finish in a 23-2 Week 9 victory in an AFL game.

The teams traded punts to start the game, then the Barnstormers drove 33 yards on 8 plays. SB Rhoads kicked a 34-yard field goal to give Iowa a 3-0 lead with 7 minutes remaining in the first quarter. The Predators attempted to respond, but Woodrow Richardson was stripped of the ball by Terace Glascock. Farrell Companis recovered for the Barnstormers at their own 41-yard line.

Iowa went three-and-out, then Orlando punted and Billy Formon angled his kick out of bounds at the Barnstormers' 5-yard line. Two plays later, Norm Damron was sacked in the end zone by Ringo Flack for a safety to make it 3-2 with with 14:46 left in the second quarter. The teams would again trade punts, then the Predators threatened to take the lead. But Abel White's 36-yard field goal attempt was wide. Iowa then went on a 9-play, 74-yard drive. Damron threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Corben Marvell to make it 10-2 with 32 seconds left in the half.

RW Warden returned the opening second-half kickoff 62 yards to the Barnstormers' 32-yard line. But White would miss a 49-yard field goal attempt. Rhoads would consequently finish an 11-play, 45-yard drive with a 33-yard field goal to extend Iowa's lead to 13-2 with 9:28 remaining in the third quarter. Isaiah O'Connell would catch a pass but the ball was jarred loose, and Emilio Shipp recovered for the Barnstormers at their own 39-yard line. Ten plays later, Powell Ramos scored on a 3-yard touchdown run to make it 20-2 with 3:12 to go in the third.

Shipp would pick off a pass by Richardson and return it 26 yards to the Orlando 33-yard line. But Rhoads would miss a 32-yard field goal attempt. The teams traded punts, then Richardson would mishandle a center snap, and Seth Waltrip recovered for Iowa at the Predators' 45-yard line. After gaining 15 yards on 8 plays, Rhoads would kick a 47-yard field goal to make it 23-2 with 2:45 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Iowa (6-3) gained 282 yards of total offense. The Barnstormers ran for 117 yards on 37 carries. Ryan Travers led the team with 74 yards on 16 carries. Damron was 18-of-27 passing for 199 yards and a TD. He was sacked five times, losing 34 yards. Chesley Miller led the receivers with 5 catches for 72 yards. Next week, the Barnstormers will host the San Jose Sabercats.

Orlando (1-8) gained 162 yards of total offense. The Predators ran for 47 yards on 18 carries. Caleb Doering led the team with 19 yards on 5 carries. Richardson was 20-of-35 passing for 143 yards and an INT. He was sacked three times, losing 28 yards. O'Connell was the leading receiver with 6 catches for 33 yards. The Predators visit the Grand Rapids Rampage next week.
