AFL: Desperados Cruise Past Rush, 30-10

ROSEMONT, IL-The Dallas Desperados dominated from start to finish defeating the Chicago Rush 30-10 in a Week 8 AFL game.

On the opening play of the game, Hershel Kimbrell was picked off by Noland Delta who returned it 19 yards to the Chicago 49-yard line. The teams would trade punts, then Dallas drove 42 yards on 8 plays. Heinie Voorhees finished it off with a 1-yard touchdown toss to Ricardo Bede to take a 7-0 lead with 7:53 remaining in the first quarter. The Rush drove toward a potential score, but Dete Justen's 41-yard field goal attempt was blocked by Les Dupwe. 

After the block, the Desperados embarked on a 17-play, 55-yard drive that ended with Greg Hall kicking a 26-yard field goal to make it 10-0 with 14:11 to go into the second quarter. After trading punts, Chicago had another golden opportunity to score, but Justen's 47-yard field goal attempt was wide. Following another Dallas punt, Delta would pick off Kimbrell again and return it 39 yards to the Desperados' 48-yard line. The Desperados looked to add their lead. but Voorhees fumbled the snap, and Niko Simon recovered for the Rush at their own 18-yard line, and the half would come to an end.

Dallas opened the second half marching 68 yards on 9 plays. Voorhees would throw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Horace Evers to make it 17-0 with 10:01 left in the third quarter. After Chicago shanked a punt on their possession, the Desperados moved the ball 39 yards on 8 plays. Voorhees would throw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Elson Gregson to take a 24-0 lead with 3:41 remaining in the third. The Rush punted, and Voorhees would fumble again, as MacArthur Fagan strip-sacked Voorhees and Reb Avis recovered at the Dallas 38-yard line. After gaining eight yards on three plays, Justen connected on a 47-yard field goal to make it 24-3 with 47 seconds left in the third quarter.

The Desperados continued to control the ball and the clock in the fourth quarter. An 8-play, 68-yard drive ended with Hall connecting on a 20-yard field goal to make it 27-3 with 10:26 left in the fourth quarter. Following a Rush punt, Dallas marched 46 yards on 12 plays, and Hall would kick a 37-yard field goal to make it 30-3 with 3:36 to go in the game. Chicago would finally make it to the end zone after a 10-play, 78-yard drive. Kimbrell threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Lonnie Clements that made it 30-10 with 22 seconds remaining. An onside kick failed, and Dallas killed the clock.

Dallas (4-4) gained 362 yards of total offense. The Desperados ran for 133 yards on 38 carries. Gregson led the team with 68 yards on 16 carries. Voorhees was 23-of-31 passing for 255 yards and 3 TD. He was sacked four times, losing 26 yards. Evers led the receivers with 10 catches for 128 yards and a TD. Next week, the Desperados host the Tampa Bay Storm.

Chicago (6-2) gained 200 yards of total offense. The Rush ran for 51 yards on 14 carries. Finley Gentry led the team with 18 yards on 4 carries. Kimbrell was 17-of-36 passing for 175 yards, 1 TD and 2 INT. He was sacked three times, losing 26 yards. Zach Allen was the leading receiver with 7 catches for 71 yards. Next week, the Rush will host the Georgia Force.
