AFL: Avengers Defeat Rampage, 27-20

LOS ANGELES-Chip Kindrick scored three touchdowns in helping the Los Angeles Avengers defeat the Grand Rapids Rampage 27-20 in a Week 9 AFL game.

Theodore Kile fielded a short kickoff for the Rampage and returned it 32 yards to the Avengers' 43-yard line. Grand Rapids then drove 38 yards on 8 plays, and George Tibbs kicked a 22-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead with 11:44 left in the first quarter. After trading punts, the Rampage would then drive 51 yards on 7 plays. Curtis Wayne would throw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Thomas Kinzer to make it 10-0 with 4:02 remaining in the first.

Los Angeles would punt on their next possession, then Grand Rapids went on a 10-play, 42-yard drive. Tibbs would kick a 27-yard field goal to make it 13-0 with 13:21 remaining in the second quarter. Willie Guess fumbled the snap on the Avengers' next possession, and Jo Jo Spotts recovered for the Rampage at the Los Angeles 16-yard line. Tibbs would miss a 31-yard field goal attempt, however. The Avengers would punt, then Courtney Harrelson would intercept a Wayne pass at the Grand Rapids 43-yard line. Seven plays later, Kindrick would score on a 1-yard touchdown run to put the Avengers on the board, 13-7 with 5:02 left in the half.

Los Angeles would punt on their first possession of the second half, then Orrin Dyre picked off Wayne at the Avengers' 27-yard line. The Avengers looked to get into scoring range, but Carmon Grimes missed a 49-yard field goal attempt. Wayne then ended a 7-play, 61-yard drive with a 22-yard touchdown pass to Herbert Shipley making it 20-7 with 3:10 to go in the third quarter. Los Angeles then answered with a 7-play, 68-yard drive. Guess then threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Kindrick to make it 20-14 with 1:02 left in the third.

Grand Rapids would punt on their next drive, then the Avengers went 80 yards on 14 plays. Guess ended the drive with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Keifer Dance to give Los Angeles a 21-20 lead with 4:26 left in the fourth quarter. Clem Wallen would pick Wayne off and return it 22 yards to the Rampage 22-yard line. Three plays later, Kindrick would score on a 14-yard touchdown run. Grimes missed the extra point, and the score was 27-20 with 1:45 to go in the fourth. Grand Rapids would start the ensuing drive from their own 32 and got as close as the Avengers' 5-yard line with 6 seconds left. But Wayne's pass to Kinzer in the end zone fell incomplete.

Los Angeles (6-3) gained 343 yards of total offense. The Avengers ran for 92 yards on 28 plays. Kindrick led the team with 69 yards on 17 carries and 2 TD. He also led with 5 receptions with 54 yards and a TD. Guess was 19-of-39 passing for 272 yards, 2 TD and 1 INT. He was sacked twice, losing 21 yards. The Avengers visit the Chicago Rush next week.

Grand Rapids (4-5) gained 360 yards of total offense. The Rampage ran for 109 yards on 25 carries. Bobo Cushing led the team with 42 yards on 7 carries. Wayne was 21-of-41 passing for 268 yards, 2 TD and 3 INT. He was sacked twice, losing 17 yards. Nikolai Vilmer was the leading receiver with 6 catches for 87 yards. The Rampage host the Orlando Predators next week.
