AFL: Avengers Pull Away From Rattlers, 27-6

PHOENIX-After turning the Arizona Rattlers away on fourth-and-goal from the 1 late in the second quarter, the Los Angeles scored 20 unanswered points in the second half to win 27-6 in a Week 8 AFL game.

The game started with Arizona going three-and-out. Chip Kindrick would field the punt and return it 73 yards for a touchdown to give Los Angeles a 7-0 with 13:16 to go in the first quarter. The Rattlers would respond with an 11-play, 70-yard drive. Burt Hamrick finished it off with a 28-yard field goal to make it 7-3 with 6:43 to go in the first. The Avengers' offense finally got on the field, but went three-and-out. Otto Pugh returned the punt 44 yards to the Los Angeles 21-yard line, but Hamrick would miss a 36-yard field goal attempt.

Following another Avengers punt, The Rattlers moved the ball 49 yards on 11 plays. Hamrick would connect on a 36-yard field goal this time to make it 7-6 with 12:43 to go in the second quarter. Los Angeles would punt the ball to the Arizona 4-yard line. The Rattlers would hold onto the ball for the next eight-and-a-half minutes, and faced a fourth-and-goal from the 1 with 2:15 left in the half. Kadeem Raburn looked to hit Crockett Rail in the end zone, but the pass fell incomplete, and the Avengers ran out the clock.

A bad punt by Nino Schwarz gave Arizona the ball at the Los Angeles 38-yard line at the start of the third quarter. But Raburn was sacked by Marv Boozer and fumbled. Bat Turney recovered for the Avengers at their own 48-yard line. The teams then traded punts, and Los Angeles would march 62 yards on 6 plays. Willie Guess would throw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Clovis Awtrey making it 14-6 with 8:39 left in the third quarter. Following another Arizona punt, the Avengers drove 62 yards again, this time taking 9 plays to do it. Guess would throw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Keifer Dance that made it 21-6 with 2:21 left in the third.

The Rattlers punted yet again, and Los Angeles drove 43 yards on 7 plays. Carmon Grimes kicked a 54-yard field goal to make it 24-6 with 11:46 to go in the fourth quarter. Raburn would be picked off by Orrin Dyre who ran it back 29 yards to the Arizona 17-yard line. After gaining seven yards on three plays, Grimes would kick a 27-yard field goal to make it 27-6 with 8:37 to go in the fourth.

Los Angeles (5-3) gained 275 yards of total offense. The Avengers ran for 94 yards on 27 carries. Cameron Devlin led the team with 30 yards on 7 carries. Guess was 16-of-25 passing for 192 yards and 2 TD. He was sacked twice, losing 11 yards. Dance was the leading receiver with 6 catches for 75 yards and a TD. Next week, the Avengers host the Grand Rapids Rampage.

Arizona (2-6) gained 285 yards of total offense. The Rattlers ran for 118 yards on 21 carries. Braxton Teal led the team with 49 yards on 6 carries. Raburn was 24-of-48 passing for 205 yards and an INT. He was sacked five times, losing 38 yards. Shelby Lerti was the leading receiver with 6 catches for 60 yards. The Rattlers host the Detroit Drive next week.
