AFL: Dallas Drops Arizona, 30-19

DALLAS-Heinie Voorhees threw three touchdown passes in helping the Dallas Desperados defeat the Arizona Rattlers 30-19 in a Week 7 AFL game.

It started early for the Desperados, as they drove 84 yards on 14 plays. Voorhees finished the drive with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Clem Shaffer to give Dallas a 7-0 lead with 8:35 remaining in the first quarter. The Rattlers answered with an 11-play, 43-yard drive, ending with a 54-yard field goal by Burt Hamrick to make it 7-3 with 4:26 to go in the first.

The teams would trade punts, then Arizona got a break when Holt Leash was stripped of the ball after a catch, and Anson Shipley scooped it up and ran back 42 yards to the Dallas 24-yard line. Following a 6-play, 18-yard drive, Hamrick kicked a 23-yard field goal to make it 7-6 with 11:28 remaining in the second quarter. The Desperados answered with a 9-play, 50-yard drive. Greg Hall would end the drive with a 32-yard field goal to make it 10-6 with 7:34 left in the half. Diron Imboden would pick off a Kadeem Raburn pass on Arizona's next possession, and Dallas would drive 46 yards on 10 plays. Hall finished it off with a 44-yard field goal to take a 13-6 lead with 1:47 to go in the second quarter.

The Rattlers would open the second half with a 5-play, 33-yard drive. Hamrick would kick a 48-yard field goal to close the gap to 13-9 with 11:48 remaining in the third quarter. Dallas drove towards a potential score, but Lloyd Barisch would pick off Voorhees and run it back 14 yards to the Arizona 28-yard line. The Rattlers would have to punt, but Franklin Steed muffed the return, and Otto Pugh fell on it at the Desperados' 34-yard line. Seven plays and seventeen yards later, Hamrick kicked a 34-yard field goal to make it 13-12 with 4:03 left in the third.

Dallas would answer back with a 12-play, 80-yard drive. Voorhees finished it off with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Elson Gregson to make it 20-12 with 14:09 left in the fourth quarter. Arizona went three-and-out, then the Desperados drove 47 yards on 7 plays. Voorhees hit Cord Rader for a 14-yard touchdown pass to make it 27-12 with 10:01 left in the fourth. The Rattlers finally got in the end zone after an 8-play, 79-yard drive ended with an 11-yard touchdown pass from Raburn to Aaron Sidney to make it 27-19 with 6:14 to go in the fourth quarter. Dallas answered with a 7-play, 28-yard drive. Hall ended the drive with a 51-yard field goal to make it 30-19 with 1:53 to go in the fourth.

Dallas (3-4) gained 414 yards of total offense. The Desperados ran for 172 yards on 32 carries. Gregson led the team with 65 yards on 15 carries. He also led with 5 receptions for 66 yards and a TD. Voorhees was 23-of-37 passing for 255 yards, 3 TD and 1 INT. He was sacked twice, losing 13 yards. The Desperados visit the Chicago Rush next week.

Arizona (2-5) gained 269 yards of total offense. The Rattlers ran for 60 yards on 14 carries. Raburn led the team with 27 yards on 4 carries. He was 21-of-38 passing for 232 yards, 1 TD and 2 INT. He was sacked three times, losing 23 yards. Shelby Lerti (98 yards) and Sidney (56 yards, TD) each caught six passes in the game. The Rattlers host the Los Angeles Avengers next week.
