AFL: Milwaukee Holds Off Tampa Bay, 30-24

TAMPA-The Milwaukee Mustangs used a big second quarter and held off an attempted rally to defeat the Tampa Bay Storm 30-24 as both teams wrapped up their AFL season.

Tampa Bay began the game with an 8-play, 73-yard drive. Jefferson Taylor finished the drive with a 4-yard touchdown run to put the Storm up 7-0 with 10:24 to go in the first quarter. Milwaukee would answer with a 16-play, 84-yard drive that ended with a 10-yard touchdown pass from JC George to Rocky Coggins to tie the game at 7 with 2 minutes remaining in the first.

After an exchange of punts, Buckley Ravens intercepted Orval Stanley and returned it 19 yards to the Mustangs 48-yard line. After an 8-play, 52-yard drive, George threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to C.C. Cage, his 12th touchdown catch of the season, to give Milwaukee a 14-7 lead with 8:40 to go in the second quarter. Hack Jarrod fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and Cody Seals returned it 16 yards for the Mustangs to the Storm 15-yard line. But George would get intercepted by Blue Hanan at the 7-yard,line. But Stanley would get sacked in the end zone by Rosey Rader for a safety to give Milwaukee a 16-7 lead with 6:39 remaining in the half. Following the safety kick, the Mustangs drove 41 yards on 9 plays, and George threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Chester Brice making it 23-7 with 2:32 left in the second quarter. The Storm would answer with a 10-play, 47-yard drive ending with a 32-yard field goal by Johnny Quincey to make it 23-10 with 6 seconds left in the half. Tampa Bay squibbed the ensuing kickoff, but Cage would take it 79 yards to put Milwaukee up 30-10 at the half.

Tampa Bay would punt to start the second half, but Rock Philbrook would miss a 38-yard field goal attempt. Stanley would get intercepted by Conn Kriner at the Milwaukee 43-yard line. The Mustangs would later punt, and the Storm would move the ball 67 yards on 12 plays. Stanley ended the drive with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Von Windle to make it 30-17 with 1:45 to go in the third quarter.

The Mustangs would punt, then the Storm would get turned away on fourth down. Following another Milwaukee punt, Stanley threw to the end zone but was intercepted by Kriner. The Mustangs punted again, and Stanley was picked off again, this time by Rocky Brant at the Milwaukee 40-yard line. The Mustangs drove into scoring position, but Philbrook would miss a 41-yard field goal. The Storm would go on a 7-play, 69-yard drive, and Stanley threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Greg Ponder on the final play of the game to make it 30-24.

Milwaukee (8-8) gained 248 yards of total offense. The Mustangs ran for 95 yards on 27 carries. Brice led the team with 49 yards on 14 carries. George was 18-of-30 passing for 199 yards, 3 TD and 1 INT. He was sacked six times, losing 46 yards. Cage led the receivers with 7 catches for 96 yards and a TD.

Tampa Bay (5-10-1) gained 403 yards of total offense. The Storm ran for 180 yards on 26 carries. Stanley led the team with 88 yards on 6 carries. He was 17-of-33 passing for 279 yards, 2 TD and 4 INT. He was sacked eight times, losing 56 yards. Windle led the receivers with 5 catches for 75 yards and a TD.
