AFL: Dragons Scorch Avengers, 37-10

UNIONDALE, NY-The New York Dragons defeated the Los Angeles Avengers 37-10 in a Week 16 AFL contest.

The game started with a Los Angeles punt, then Faron Emerson was intercepted by Carlisle June at the Avengers 26-yard line. Then Juan York was picked off by Omar Wheeley at the Los Angeles 38-yard line. Burt Hamrick would miss a 55-yard field goal, then York was sacked by Scott Van Horne and Vance Bicker recovered for the Dragons at the 37-yard line. After three plays gained nine yards, Hamrick would kick a 45-yard field goal to go up 3-0 with 4:10 remaining in the first quarter.

The Avengers would answer with a 9-play, 68-yard drive that ended with a 6-yard touchdown run by Cameron Devlin to put Los Angeles up 7-3 with 14:15 left in the second quarter. New York responded with a 14-play, 81-yard drive that ended with a 4-yard touchdown run by Melvin Betts to give the Dragons a 10-7 lead with 8:40 remaining in the half. Following an Avengers punt, the Dragons drove 80 yards on 6 plays. Freddy Ashercraft finished it off with a 1-yard touchdown run to make it 17-7 with 3:17 left in the second quarter. Los Angeles moved into scoring position, but Carmon Grimes' 35-yard field goal attempt was partially blocked.

In the third quarter, the teams would trade punts until late in the quarter, when the Dragons would move the ball 41 yards on 6 plays. Emerson finished the drive with a 4-yard touchdown pass to extend New York's lead to 24-7 with 2:49 left in the third quarter. The Avengers would move 37 yards on 5 plays, ending with Grimes kicking a 47-yard field goal to make it 24-10 with 19 seconds to go in the third.

On New York's ensuing possession, the Dragons would drive 76 yards on 11 plays. George Larron ended the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run to make it 31-10 with 9:06 to go in the fourth quarter. After an Avengers punt, New York would drive 47 yards on 11 plays. Hamrick finished it off with a 48-yard field goal to make it 34-10 with 2:10 left in the fourth. After another Los Angeles punt, New York went on a 5-play, 18-yard drive ending with a Hamrick 44-yard field goal to make it 37-10 with 15 seconds remaining.

New York (8-8) gained 434 yards of total offense. The Dragons ran for 123 yards on 34 carries. Ashercraft led the team with 50 yards on 14 carries and a TD. Emerson went 22-of-35 passing for 290 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. He was not sacked during the game. Booker Starling was New York's leading receiver with 6 catches for 128 yards.

Los Angeles (5-11) gained 252 yards of total offense. The Avengers ran for 74 yards on 21 carries. Chip Kindrick led the team with 28 yards on 11 carries. York was 21-of-30 passing for 221 yards and 1 INT. He was sacked six times, losing 43 yards. Ken Lavue led the receivers with 7 catches for 66 yards.
