CIFL: Warthogs Survive Splash, 31-24

ANAHEIM-Corliss Wardell threw four touchdown passes and the Washington Warthogs came up with a late turnover to defeat the Anaheim Splash in a Week 4 CIFL game 31-24.

Washington got the ball first and moved 65 yards on 13 plays. Wardell finished the drive with a 28-yard touchdown pass to Marshall Garver to take a 7-0 lead with 9:32 left in the first quarter. After an Anaheim punt, Wardell was picked off by Jon Petrey who ran it back 19 yards to the Warthogs 1-yard line. On the next play, Cobey Bumpers scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 7 with 5:45 to go in the first.

The teams would trade punts into the second quarter, and on a Splash punt, Tito Dobbins returned it 42 yards to the Anaheim 23-yard line. Five plays later, Wardell threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Hanan to give the Warthogs a 14-7 lead with 10:47 left in the half. After both teams traded punts, Anaheim drove 88 yards on 9 plays. Harlan Finnegan put an end to the drive with a 25-yard touchdown pass to Ham Lassiter tying the game at 14 with 2:07 to go in the second quarter. The Warthogs would strike back with a 14-play, 75-yard drive. Wardell finished it off with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Scooter Womack with 10 seconds remaining to give Washington a 21-14 lead at halftime.

After Anaheim went three-and-out to start the second half, Washington took the ball from their own 10 and moved 65 yards on 17 plays. The drive ended with Stephan Hooper kicking a 42-yard field goal to make it 24-14 with 5:16 left in the third quarter. The Splash would answer with an 8-play, 30-yard drive ending with Butler Elliott kicking a 50-yard field goal to make it 24-17 with 1:51 remaining in the third.

Both teams traded punts, and after a Warthogs punt, Kaleo Hendricks fumbled on the return and Jess Ferrill picked it up and ran it 14 yards to the Splash 46-yard line. Four plays later, Wardell hit Harrison Crocker for a 1-yard touchdown pass making it 31-17 with 7:07 to go in the fourth quarter. It took the Splash three plays to travel 90 yards. Finnegan finished it with a 29-yard touchdown pass to Bumpers to make it 31-24 with 5:29 remaining in the fourth. Hooper missed a 39-yard field goal, and Anaheim had a chance to tie the game. But Tap Edwards would sack Finnegan and force a fumble that was recovered by Gordie Wyse who ran it 17 yards to the Splash 34-yard line. From there, the Warthogs ran out the clock to secure their second straight win.

Washington (2-2) gained 340 yards of total offense. The Warthogs ran for 104 yards on 37 carries. Garver led the team with 57 yards on 22 carries. Wardell went 21-of-38 passing for 236 yards, 4 TD and 1 INT and was not sacked. Womack (67 yards, TD) and Lane Drope (25 yards) each caught 4 passes. Next week, the Warthogs visit the Houston Hotshots.

Anaheim (1-3) gained 265 yards of total offense. The Splash ran for 71 yards on 24 carries. Finnegan led the team with 37 yards on 11 carries. He was 13-of-27 passing for 172 yards and 2 TD. He was sacked twice losing 9 yards. Lassiter (61 yards, TD) and Bumpers (54 yards, TD) each caught 3 passes. The Splash host the Seattle Seadogs hoping to do better than the 36-3 loss they suffered in Week 2.
