CIFL: Hotshots Burn Past Seadogs, 25-9

HOUSTON-The Houston Hotshots scored 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to defeat the Seattle Seadogs 25-9 in a Week 3 CIFL game.

There was not a lot of action in the first quarter. The teams would trade punts and then Roman Shoe would fumble at the Houston 30-yard line and Stewart Lavue recovered for the Hotshots. Houston would then punt, and the Seadogs would drive 57 yards on 13 plays. Shoe would end the drive scoring on a 2-yard touchdown run to give Seattle a 7-0 lead with 24 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

After a Houston punt was downed on the Seattle 6-yard line, Roynell Valentine would burst through the line and sack Curtis Kesterson in the end zone for a safety to make it 7-2 with 13:18 remaining in the second quarter. Following the safety kick, the Hotshots went 17 yards on 5 plays, and Martin Seal kicked a 46-yard field goal to make it 7-5 with 10:57 left in the half. Following a Seadogs punt, Houston again went on the move with an 11-play, 66-yard drive. Seal finished it off with a 36-yard field goal with 1:18 remaining in the second, and the Hotshots took an 8-7 lead into the half.

The third quarter was much the same as the first quarter. The teams would trade punts back-and-forth until Denver Teal picked off a Kesterson pass at the Houston 6-yard line. But three plays later, Barney Brant would get sacked in the end zone by Tyree Reese for a safety, and Seattle took a 9-8 lead with 3:17 left in the third quarter.

Teal would intercept Kesterson again late in the third, and Houston drove 59 yards on 3 plays. Brant finished it off with a 31-yard touchdown pass to Jerris Vaughn. The 2-point conversion was good, and the Hotshots led 16-9 with 14:14 left in the fourth quarter. Kesterson would get picked off again, this time by Nathaniel Hatton who returned it 40 yards to the Seattle 35-yard line. After gaining 9 yards on 4 plays, Seal kicked a 43-yard field goal to make it 19-9 with 8:40 remaining in the fourth. Grant Nathaniel fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and Hugo Harbin recovered for Houston at the 24-yard line. After a 6-play, 20-yard drive, Seal drilled a 21-yard field goal to go up 22-9 with 4:35 left in the fourth quarter. Kesterson was picked off one more time, as Norris Kettler returned it 6 yards to the Hotshots 36-yard line. Following a 7-play, 33-yard drive, Seal kicked a 48-yard field goal with 15 seconds remaining to make the final 25-9.
