CIFL: Seattle Beats Anaheim, 31-23

ANAHEIM-The Seattle Seadogs used a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to prevail over the Anaheim Splash 31-23 in a Week 5 CIFL game.

Seattle started the game driving 48 yards on 7 plays. Tyne Dill finished the drive with a 42-yard field goal to give the Seadogs a 3-0 lead with 11:36 remaining in the first. Benny Gee would fumble the ensuing kickoff, and Dill recovered for Seattle at the Anaheim 38-yard line. But the Seadogs would be sacked out of field goal range, and forced to punt. The Splash would punt, and Seattle appeared primed to score, but Thurman Cato picked off Curtis Kesterson at Anaheim's 2-yard line.

After the pick, Anaheim would drive 65 yards on 9 plays, ending with a 50-yard field goal by Butler Elliott to tie the game at 3 with 12:22 to go in the second quarter. The Seadogs went three-and-out, and the Splash were on the move again, going 15 yards on 6 plays. Elliott kicked a 45-yard field goal to give Anaheim a 6-3 lead with 9:17 remaining in the half. Seattle moved down toward a score, but Kesterson fumbled after being sacked by Lovell Wyrick, and Jon Petrey recovered for the Splash at their own 25-yard line. Brett Fusco finished the 15-play, 75-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run with 34 seconds remaining to take a 13-3 lead. But Seattle took only three plays to go 63 yards, the final 53 coming on a touchdown pass from Kesterson to Blake Gilkey on the final play of the half to go into the locker room down 13-10.

At the start of the second half, Harlan Finnegan was sacked by Harlan Fortner who recovered the fumble at the Seattle 35-yard line. But Wyrick would later strip Kesterson again, and Benny Dobler recovered for the Splash at the Anaheim 34-yard line. Three plays later, Finnegan threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Fusco to extend their lead to 20-10 with 8:51 remaining in the third quarter. The Seadogs would answer back with an 11-play, 60-yard drive. Royce Lodge would score on a 7-yard reverse to make it 20-17 with 3:59 remaining in the third. The Splash drove into position for Elliott to attempt a 45-yard field goal, but it was blocked by Panco Tedwell.

After a Seattle punt, Finnegan would get picked off by Garth Baldinger who took it 7 yards to the Anaheim 19-yard line. But Dill would miss a 31-yard field goal attempt. After a Splash punt, the Seadogs went 78 yards on 6 plays. Kesterson finished it with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Lyndon Fabrizio to take a 24-20 lead with 7:47 remaining in the fourth. Finnegan would get intercepted again, and Cooper Fusco ran it back 52 yards to the Anaheim 13-yard line. Four plays later, Isaac Thoms scored on a 3-yard touchdown run to make it 31-20 with 3:58 to go in the fourth. Anaheim would drive 75 yards on 10 plays, and Elliott kicked a 22-yard field goal to make it 31-23 with 1:37 remaining in the fourth quarter. The onside kick failed, and Seattle would run out the clock.

Seattle (4-1) gained 399 yards of total offense. The Seadogs ran for 80 yards on 24 carries. Roman Shoe led the team with 38 yards on 13 carries. Kesterson went 28-of-38 passing for 382 yards, 2 TD and 1 INT. He was sacked seven times, losing 63 yards. Trent Dillon was the leading receiver with 15 catches for 174 yards. The Seadogs will host the Detroit Neon next week.

Anaheim (1-4) gained 441 yards of total offense. The Splash ran for 115 yards on 22 carries. Fusco led the team with 75 yards on 12 carries and a TD. He also led with 6 receptions for 61 yards and a TD. Finnegan went 24-of-42 passing for 332 yards, 1 TD and 2 INT. He was sacked once for a 6-yard loss. The Splash will visit the Houston Hotshots next week.
