AFL: Force Prevail in OT, 21-18

ORLANDO-Three weeks ago, the Orlando Predators were humiliated by the Georgia Force, being held to 50 yards of total offense in a 39-7 blowout loss. This week, they were much more competitive, but still fell in overtime to the Force in Week 8 of the AFL season, 21-18.

The game started slowly, as the teams traded punts. Then midway through the quarter, Orlando embarked on a 9-play, 73-yard drive that ended with Abel White kicking a 24-yard field goal with 4:51 to go in the first to take a 3-0 lead. The Force moved down the field, but Wilbur Ahmad would miss a 46-yard field goal attempt early in the second quarter.

The Predators got the ball back, and a 6-play, 64-yard drive was punctuated with a 54-yard touchdown pass from DJ Haji to Farren Smithson, and Orlando shot to a 10-0 lead with 12:22 to go in the half. Lin Byers would fumble the ensuing kickoff, and White recovered for the Predators at the Georgia 18-yard line. But the Predators would cough it up, as D.J. Giles fumbled at the 4, and Pete Love fell on it for the Force. Georgia would drive again, and Ahmad lined up for a 53-yard field goal, but it was blocked by Cleveland Whitaker who picked it up and ran it 24 yards to the Georgia 25-yard line. But on the next play, Haji was picked off by Raymond Clements who returned it 17 yards to the Force 36. Both teams would punt, and the Force would drive 38 yards on 7 plays. Ahmad would finally make a field goal, as his 35-yarder with 8 seconds left in the half put Georgia on the board, trailing 10-3 at halftime.

The Predators started the second half with a punt, and the Force answered with a 9-play, 74-yard drive. Norm Damron finished it off with a 21-yard touchdown pass to Gevan Crafton to tie the game at 10 with 8:11 left in the third quarter. Orlando was quick to respond with a 5-play, 65-yard drive, Haji ended the drive with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Steven Thompson. The extra point was no good, and the Predators led 16-10 with 5:54 to go in the third. Both teams traded punts, and Yannel Fletcher pinned the Force back at their own 4-yard line. Damron would then get sacked in the end zone by Orlan Capalletti for a safety to make it 18-10 Orlando with 2:51 to go in the third quarter.

Orlando would fumble on their next possession, and it was recovered by Love at the Orlando 46. But the teams would trade punts, and Georgia's Walter Halley would fumble deep in Orlando territory, and Ed Tennison recovered for the Predators at their own 13. The Predators would punt again, and the Force would move the ball 66 yards on 10 plays. Damron would finish the drive with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Paden Bonewell. The Force's 2-Point Conversion was good, and the game was tied at 18 with 45 seconds remaining in regulation. Orlando couldn't drive for a score, and the game was sent into overtime.

Georgia punted to start the overtime period. Haji fumbled the snap, and Phillip Schmidt recovered for the Force at the Orlando 25-yard line. After a 6-play, 18-yard drive, Ahmad would kick a 24-yard field goal with 10:05 remaining in overtime, and Georgia won the game.

Georgia (4-4) gained 419 yards of total offense. The Force ran for 98 yards on 29 carries. Halley led the team with 39 yards on 11 carries. Damron went 33-of-53 passing for 326 yards and 2 TD. He was sacked twice, losing 5 yards. Bonewell equaled Foster Warhurst's single-game reception record with 13 catches for 123 yards and a TD. The Force will visit the Colorado Crush next week.

Orlando (2-6) gained 336 yards of total offense. The Predators ran for 61 yards on 19 carries. Giles led the team with 38 yards on 12 carries. Haji went 22-of-35 passing for 284 yards, 2 TD and 1 INT. He was sacked once for a 9-yard loss. Thompson led the receivers with 5 receptions for 36 yards and a TD. The Predators will visit the Arizona Rattlers next week.

AFL: Storm, Kats Fit To Be Tied

TAMPA-Foster Warhurst had a record-setting performance, but it wasn't enough as the Tampa Bay Storm and Nashville Kats played to a 26-26 tie in a Week 8 AFL game.

The Kats started the game with a 12-play, 57-yard drive that ended with Daniel Stevenson kicking a 40-yard field goal with 9:03 remaining in the first to take a 3-0 lead. Both the Storm and Kats then traded punts, then Tampa Bay drove 29 yards on 8 plays. Johnny Quincey finished the drive with 1:21 left in the first quarter to tie the game at 3-3.

Nashville went three-and-out to start the second quarter, and a 62-yard punt return by Drake Cushing set up a 4-play, 19-yard drive that saw Orval Stanley complete a 7-yard touchdown pass to Warhurst to put the Storm up 9-3 with 13:07 to go in the second quarter. The Kats responded with a 5-play, 62-yard drive that saw Brewster Brickhouse complete a 44-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Falk and Nashville pulled ahead 10-9 with 10:18 left in the half. After a Tampa Bay punt, the Kats drove again, going 80 yards on 7 plays. Brickhouse threw another touchdown, this one a 13-yarder to Davis Weems to extend Nashville's lead to 17-9 with 5:37 left in the second quarter. The Storm would answer with an 11-play, 60-yard drive. Stanley ended the drive by sneaking in from a yard out. Tampa Bay went for two to try to make up a missed extra point but failed, and the Storm trailed 17-15 with 2:01 remaining in the half. Nashville would then drive 75 yards on 9 plays. Stevenson ended the drive with a 22-yard field goal with 23 seconds remaining, and the teams went into the locker room with the Kats leading 20-15.

Greg Ponder took the second half kickoff for the Storm and returned it 59 yards to the Nashville 25. After six plays gained 16 yards, Quincey kicked a 26-yard field goal with 12:07 to go in the third to make it 20-18. The Kats drove 54 yards on 10 plays, and Stevenson would kick a 37-yard field goal to go up 23-18 with 6:38 remaining in the third quarter. Tampa Bay would punt, and Nashville would go on a 12-play, 54-yard drive that saw Stevenson kick a 31-yard field goal with 13:39 remaining in the fourth quarter, and Nashville was up 26-18.

Tampa would punt on their next drive, and Brickhouse would get picked off by Elvin Pauls who returned it 9 yards to the Kats' 21-yard line. But Stanley would be sacked by Hawk Tostada and fumbled, and Jaureen Karnes recovered for the Kats at their own 32. Nashville would punt, and Stanley was intercepted by Hamilton Berger who returned it 15 yards to the Nashville 39-yard line. But the Kats went three-and-out and punted. The Storm then struck for a 7-play, 80-yard drive that saw Stanley complete a 4-yard touchdown pass to Jefferson Taylor. Tampa Bay converted for two and the game was tied at 26 with 57 seconds left in regulation, and the game went into overtime.

Tampa Bay got the ball first, but Stanley was intercepted by Berger again at the Nashville 35-yard line. The Kats went three-and-out, and the Storm looked for all the world to be driving for the winning score, but they got greedy and Stanley was picked off in the end zone by Lando Reynolds who returned it to the Kats' 18-yard line. Nashville tried to drive down the field but had to punt, and it came down to Quincey attempting a 46-yard field goal with 17 seconds left in overtime. The kick sailed wide, and Brickhouse's desperation deep pass was intercepted by Cushing to end the game in a tie.

Nashville (3-4-1) gained 464 yards of total offense. The Kats ran for 156 yards on 46 carries. Weems and Damien Holden each ran for 48 yards. Brickhouse went 23-of-37 passing for 308 yards, 2 TD and 2 INT and was not sacked. Vittorio Swane caught 5 passes for 91 yards, and Cobey Kingston caught 5 passes for 51 yards. Nashville goes on the road next week to face the Los Angeles Avengers.

Tampa Bay (5-2-1) gained 445 yards of total offense. The Storm gained 77 yards rushing on 20 carries. Taylor led the team with 27 yards on 5 carries. Stanley went 33-of-51 passing for 384 yards, 2 TD and 3 INT. He was sacked three times, losing 16 yards. Warhurst set a single-game record with 13 receptions for 166 yards and a TD. The Storm travel to San Jose to face the Sabercats next week.

AFL: Wenning Boots Firebirds to 30-27 Win Over Dragons

UNIONDALE, NY-Dom Wenning kicked a 36-yard field goal with 11 seconds left to lift the Albany Firebirds to a 30-27 victory over the New York Dragons in a Week 8 AFL game.

The Firebirds did not have a good start as Sinbad Gargaro had a pass intercepted by Hans Magnolia at the New York 45. But the Dragons couldn't move the ball and had to punt. Albany then went on a 13-play, 80-yard drive that was sustained when punter Flint Percell recovered from a bad snap and completed a 12-yard pass to Stud Springs for a first down at the Dragons' 48. Gargaro would finish the drive with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Pinky Gardner and gave the Firebirds a 7-0 lead with 7:48 left in the first quarter. The Dragons would respond with a 10-play, 62-yard drive that ended with Faron Emerson throwing a 12-yard touchdown pass to Booker Starling with 2:08 left in the first to tie the game at 7-7.

The Firebirds would punt on their next drive, and New York would move 60 yards on 7 plays. Emerson would finish the drive off with a 24-yard touchdown pass to Freddy Ashercraft to give New York a 14-7 lead with 12:16 remaining in the half. Albany was quick to respond, finishing a 4-play, 67-yard drive with Gargaro unleashing a 50-yard bomb to Teddy Harley for a touchdown to tie it at 14 with 10:32 to go in the second quarter. The Dragons would then drive 40 yards on 7 plays, with Burt Hamrick kicking a 43-yard field goal to take a 17-14 lead with 6:56 to go in the first half. After Albany went three-and-out, New York would drive 29 yards on 4 plays, and Hamrick would kick a 53-yard field goal with 3:11 left in the second quarter to give the Dragons a 20-14 lead. The Firebirds would fumble the ensuing kickoff, but Butler Stonewall would intercept Emerson and return it to the Firebirds' 29-yard line. However, Gargaro would be victimized again by Magnolia at the Albany 41. But the Firebirds would get it back after Stanford Barbee picked Emerson off and return it 48 yards to the New York 25. Three plays and seven yards later, Wenning would kick a 35-yard field goal with 1:42 to go in the half and Albany would go to the locker room down 20-17.

In the third quarter, the Dragons started with an 11-play, 80-yard drive. Emerson would finish the drive with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Elvis Darnell with 9:28 left in the third to go up 27-17. A long kickoff return by Tico Ponder started a 9-play, 25-yard drive that Wenning ended with a 36-yard field goal to make it 27-20 with 5:12 to go in the third quarter.

After that, punting dominated the remainder of the third quarter. In the fourth, Emerson was picked off by Finley Noon at the New York 36-yard line. But Ponder fumbled and Dusty Mills recovered for the Dragons at their own 18. After that, the teams traded punts. Melvin Betts would fumble a handoff, and Austin Carle recovered for the Firebirds at the Dragons' 41-yard line. Seven plays later, Albany scored on a 4-yard touchdown run by Scooter Colby to tie the game at 27 with 3:38 left in regulation. The Dragons went three-and-out, and the Firebirds started at their own 29 with 1:52 to go. After Albany gained 52 yards on 6 plays, Wenning came out and calmly drilled the 36-yard game winner with 11 seconds to go, and Albany moved into second place in the Eastern Division.

Albany (5-3) gained 306 yards of total offense. The Firebirds ran for 67 yards on 25 carries. Abdul Fowler led the team with 29 yards on 10 carries. Gargaro went 19-of-32 passing for 247 yards, 2 TD and 2 INT. He was sacked twice, losing 20 yards. Harley led Firebird receivers with 7 catches for 83 yards and a TD. Albany will visit the Milwaukee Mustangs next week.

New York (4-4) gained 383 yards of total offense. The Dragons gained 124 yards rushing on 33 carries. George Larron led the team with 54 yards on 13 carries. Emerson was 22-of-39 passing for 259 yards, 3 TD and 4 INT and was not sacked. Larron caught 5 passes for 71 yards. Darnell caught 5 passes for 35 yards and a TD. The Dragons are on the road against the Dallas Desperados next week.

AFL: Drive Run Over Rampage, 39-15

GRAND RAPIDS-The Detroit Drive scored 39 unanswered points in blowing past the Grand Rapids Rampage 39-15 in a Week 8 AFL game.

The game didn't start out very well, as the Drive went three-and-out and Delbert Alonso was tackled at the Rampage 13 after a botched snap on the punt. On the following play, Curtis Wayne hit Nikolai Vilmer for a 13-yard touchdown pass to take a 7-0 lead with 13:38 to go in the first. After both teams traded punts, Detroit went on a 10-play, 75-yard drive that ended with Lou Couch throwing a 3-yard touchdown pass to Patch Brolie to tie the game at 7 with 5:28 remaining in the first. Hudie Naylor fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and Hoyle Swindle recovered for the Drive at the Grand Rapids 45. After a 5-play, 18-yard drive, Cletis Frayer kicked a 44-yard field goal with 2:19 remaining in the first quarter to go up 10-7.

The second quarter was fairly slow as both teams punted to start the quarter. George Tibbs missed a 55-yard field goal attempt with 6:11 left in the second quarter, and Detroit would then drive 55 yards on 10 plays. Couch ended the drive with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Vern Kelly to extend the Drive's lead to 17-7 with 1:58 to go in the half. After the Rampage went three-and-out, Detroit hurried down again with a 7-play, 42-yard drive that ended with a 36-yard field goal by Frayer with 4 seconds remaining in the half to go into the locker room up 20-7.

Grand Rapids punted to start the second half, and Detroit was on the move again, going 65 yards on 10 plays. Frayer finished it off with a 31-yard field goal to make it 23-7 with 7:54 left in the third. After another Rampage three-and-out, the Drive had a 4-play, 35-yard drive, ending with a 33-yard field goal by Frayer to make it 26-7 with 3:35 left in the third.

Grand Rapids punted once again, and Detroit marched downfield again going 55 yards on 8 plays. Frayer kicked his fifth field goal of the game, this one from 26 yards out to go up 29-7 with 12:58 to go in the game. The Rampage's desperation would come up to bite them as T.T. Presley intercepted Wayne and returned it 16 yards for a touchdown to go up 36-7 with 12:19 to go. Another Wayne interception, this time by Stan Florin, would set Detroit up for a 7-play, 28-yard drive, and Frayer would kick field goal number six, another 26-yarder, to make it 39-7 with 8:31 to go in the game. The Rampage would finally get something going with a 6-play, 59-yard drive. Wayne would throw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Bud Tyrer and the two-point conversion was good. But it was too little too late, as they were down 39-15 with 6:36 to go in the game. Not much of note happened after that.

Detroit (6-2) gained 427 yards of total offense. The Drive ran for 183 yards on 39 carries. Brolie led the team with 49 yards on 11 carries. Couch ran for 44 yards on 7 carries. Couch went 22-of-35 passing for 269 yards and 2 TD. He was sacked three times, losing 25 yards. Kelly led the receivers with 7 catches for 75 yards and a TD. Next week, the Drive visit the Chicago Rush.

Grand Rapids (4-4) gained 177 yards of total offense. The Rampage were held to 51 yards rushing on 20 carries. Toby Harrell led the team with 19 yards on 8 carries. Wayne was 10-of-26 passing for 130 yards, 2 TD and 2 INT. He was sacked once for a 4-yard loss. Clift Gregory led Grand Rapids with 4 receptions for 46 yards. Tryer caught 2 passes for 52 yards and a TD. The Rampage go on the road to face the Iowa Barnstormers next week.

AFL: White, Predators Walk-Off Over Avengers, 40-37

ORLANDO-A game between two of the AFL's "bottom feeders" turned out to be an exciting game as the Orlando Predators defeated the Los Angeles Avengers at the buzzer by a score of 40-37 in Week 7 action.

The Predators started the game out with a punt, then Juan York of the Avengers was intercepted by Jack Stuckey at the Orlando 27-yard line. After that, the Preds went on a 11-play, 73-yard drive that ended with DJ Haji throwing a 16-yard touchdown pass to Steven Thompson with 6:21 to go in the first to take a 7-0 lead. Igor Keough fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Franklin Read recovered for Orlando at the 23-yard line. After gaining 1 yard and getting a running into the kicker penalty, Abel White kicked a 34-yard field goal with 5:06 remaining in the first to make it 10-0. On Los Angeles' next drive, York was intercepted again, this time by Fahad Ruff at the Predators' 47. After that, the punters dominated the remainder of the quarter until Yannel Fletcher placed a perfect coffin corner kick at the Avengers 3-yard line. Chip Kindrick was then tackled in the end zone for a safety by Ringo Flack to put Orlando up 12-0 with 30 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

After the safety kick, the Predators moved the ball 21 yards on 8 plays, and White kicked a 51-yard field goal to make it 15-0 with 12:10 remaining in the first half. With that, Los Angeles's offense finally held on to the ball and drove 66 yards on 10 plays, and Kindrick would score on a 5-yard touchdown run to make it 15-7 with 7:25 remaining in the second. Orlando would fall victim to the interception bug on their next drive, as Archie Umsted picked Haji off in the end zone for a touchback. Los Angeles then went on a 7-play, 45-yard drive that ended with a 52-yard field goal by Carmon Grimes with 1:54 remaining in the half to make it 15-10. Orlando punted, then Ruff intercepted York again to end the half.

The second half began with a bang as Keough atoned for his earlier fumble and returned the second half kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown. The Avengers attempted to go for two and failed, and were up 16-15 with 14:44 left in the third quarter. Haji fumbled the snap for Orlando, and Austin Fairleigh recovered for the Avengers at the Orlando 42. But the turnover was for naught, as York was picked off by Steve Trevathan who returned it 7 yards to the Predators 12. Orlando then drove 88 yards on 12 plays, ending with a 1-yard touchdown pass from Haji to Farren Smithson. The Predators 2-Point conversion was good, and Orlando pulled ahead 23-16 with 5:41 to go in the third quarter. Another Los Angeles scoring threat was snuffed out by a York interception, this time by Denver Frakes in the end zone. But Haji was subsequently picked off by Clem Wallen at the Orlando 28-yard line.

Following that interception, Los Angeles went on a 5-play, 28-yard drive that saw York scramble in from four yards out that tied the game at 23 with 12:59 to go in the fourth. The Predators would respond with an 8-play, 73-yard drive, ending with Haji throwing a 1-yard touchdown pass to Thompson to put Orlando up 30-23 with 8:15 to go in the fourth. After an Avengers punt, Orlando drove 41 yards on 4 plays, with Labe Felts scoring on an 8-yard touchdown run to put the Predators up 37-23 with 4:40 left in the game. On the enusing kickoff, Keough would take off for another touchdown, this one a 97-yarder, to cut the deficit to 37-30 with 4:24 to go. The Predators would punt on their next drive, and the Avengers would move on a 6-play, 80-yard drive. York would finish the drive with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Ken Lavue with 30 seconds left to tie the game at 37. RW Warden took the ensuing kickoff at his own 15 and returned it 34 yards to the 49. Two plays later, the Predators were at the Avengers 36 with 5 seconds remaining. White came on and kicked a 53-yard field goal to win the game.

Orlando (2-5) gained 406 yards of total offense. The Predators ran for 109 yards on 29 carries. D.J. Giles led the team with 56 yards on 14 carries. Haji went 27-of-38 passing for 334 yards, 3 TD and 2 INT. He was sacked five times, losing 37 yards. Thompson led Orlando receivers with 7 catches for 70 yards and 2 TD. Next week, the Predators will host the Georgia Force, who clobbered them 39-7 in Week 5.

Los Angeles (2-5) gained 297 yards of total offense. The Avengers gained 126 yards on 23 carries. Kindrick led the team with 57 yards on 13 carries and a TD. York was 14-of-25 passing for 197 yards, 1 TD and 5 INT. He was sacked three times, losing 26 yards. Lavue led the Avengers with 6 receptions for 85 yards and a TD. The Avengers will host the Arizona Rattlers next week, looking to avenge a 27-17 defeat in Week 5.

AFL: Georgia Defeats Arizona, 33-17

ATLANTA-Norm Damron showed why he is the most efficient quarterback in the AFL with a 4-touchdown performance in a 33-17 victory for the Georgia Force over the Arizona Rattlers during Week 7 of the AFL season.

Damron and the Force started things off early with a 9-play, 58-yard drive that ended with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Paden Bonewell to give Georgia a 7-0 lead with 11:49 to go in the first quarter. Arizona seemed to get a drive going, but Pablo Cadwell fumbled on a handoff, and Pete Love recovered for the Force at the Georgia 21-yard line. Damron then rattled off a 9-play, 79-yard drive. Bonewell caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Damron to put Georgia up 14-0 with 4:09 to go in the first. The Rattlers would respond with an 11-play, 43-yard drive, and Pancho Barrow kicked a 52-yard field goal with 14:54 to go in the half to make it 14-3.

Things slowed down in the second quarter. The teams traded punts twice, and then late in the quarter, the Force would drive 47 yards on 4 plays. Damron would throw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Sidney to give Georgia a 21-3 lead with 2:04 left in the half. The Rattlers quickly responded with a 4-play, 80-yard drive, and Don Fawcett pitched a 39-yard touchdown strike to Otto Pugh with 1:06 left in the second quarter, and the Rattlers went into halftime down 21-10.

A 51-yard kickoff return by Will Meads gave Arizona the ball at the Georgia 38-yard line to start the second half, and it looked as if the Rattlers might make it a one-possession game. But Arvil Stinson fumbled at the 6, and Sputnik Havner recovered for the Force. After that, Georgia drove 92 yards on 10 plays, and had to settle for a 19-yard field goal by Wilbur Ahmad to go up 24-10 with 5:45 left in the third quarter. Hack McDonald ran another long kickoff return to give the Rattlers the ball in Georgia territory. This time, Arizona drove 42 yards on 7 plays. Shelby Lerti ran for a 6-yard touchdown on a reverse to make it 24-17 with 2:36 remaining in the third.

Georgia punted to open the fourth quarter, and Arizona fumbled the ball away again. Melvin Jones was the fumbler this time, and Ward Hilton recovered for the Force at the Arizona 34. After that, Georgia drove 34 yards on 5 plays, with Damron throwing a 3-yard touchdown pass to Gevan Crafton. The extra point was missed, and Georgia led 30-17 with 10:10 to go in the game. Arizona's next drive ended in an interception by Lin Byers. Georgia went three-and-out, but the Rattlers were turned away on fourth down on their ensuing drive. The Force killed the clock with an 8-play, 26-yard drive and Ahmad kicked a 36-yard field goal with 45 seconds left to make it 33-17 in Georgia's favor.

Georgia (3-4) gained 403 yards of total offense. The Force ran for 128 yards on 36 carries. Clem Foulks led the team with 55 yards on 19 carries. Damron was 22-of-28 passing for 282 yards and 4 TD.
