HOUSTON-The Houston Hotshots scored 17 straight points in the third quarter to close a 21-14 halftime lead into a 44-20 rout of the Washington Warthogs in a Week 5 CIFL game.
Washington opened the game with a 7-play, 72-yard drive. Corliss Wardell finished it off with a 25-yard touchdown pass to Scooter Womack to take a 7-0 lead with 11:50 remaining in the first quarter. Houston would answer with an 8-play 73 yard drive ending with an 11-yard touchdown run by Jerris Vaughn to tie the game at 7 with 8:33 to go in the first. Both teams traded punts, then Wardell was picked off by Esteban Reed who returned it 27 yards to the Hotshots 31-yard line. Four plays later, Barney Brant completed a 21-yard touchdown pass to Wallace Hinshaw to make it 14-7 with 1:04 remaining in the first quarter.
After a Warthogs punt, the Hotshots went 71 yards on 3 plays, the final 56 coming on a Hank Olive touchdown run to go up 21-7 with 12:57 left in the second quarter. Both teams would trade punts, the Warthogs would drive 62 yards on 11 plays. Marshall Garver would score on a 1-yard touchdown run to make it 21-14 with 2:51 left in the half.
The Hotshots opened the second half with a 13-play, 73-yard drive. Vaughn finished the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run to make it 28-14 with 8:47 to go in the third quarter. On the ensuing Warthogs possession, Wardell was intercepted by Nathaniel Hatton at the Washington 24-yard line. After nine plays netted eight yards, Martin Seal kicked a 33-yard field goal to make it 31-14 with 4:47 left in the third. Washington would punt, and Houston needed only two plays to score. Brant would fire a 79-yard touchdown pass to Hinshaw to make it 38-14 with 1:52 to go in the third quarter.
Late in the third, Reed intercepted Wardell and returned it 22 yards to the Washington 27-yard line. After four plays gained 14 yards, Seal would kick a 30-yard field goal to make it 41-14 with 14:12 left in the fourth quarter. The Warthogs were turned away on fourth down at the Houston 15-yard line. Following a Hotshots punt, Washington drove 69 yards on 7 plays. Wardell finished it off with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Hanan. The extra point was no good, and the Warthogs trailed 41-20 with 3:54 remaining in the fourth. The onside kick failed, and the Hotshots went on a 6-play, 18-yard drive. Seal kicked a 44-yard field goal with 1:10 remaining to make it 44-20.
Houston (2-2) gained 463 yards of total offense. The Hotshots ran for 186 yards on 32 carries. Olive led the team with 101 yards on 14 carries and a TD. Brant went 23-of-31 passing for 267 yards and 2 TD. He was sacked twice, losing 19 yards. Hinshaw was the leading receiver with 6 catches for 157 yards and 2 TD. The Hothshots will host the Anaheim Splash next week.
Washington (2-3) gained 344 yards of total offense. The Warthogs ran for 79 yards on 15 carries. Garver led the team with 50 yards on 10 carries and a TD. Wardell went 24-of-47 passing for 281 yards, 2 TD and 4 INT. Womack (97 yards, TD) Hanan (63 yards, TD) and Saul St. Paul (70 yards) each had 6 receptions. The Warthogs will visit the Michigan Bombers next week.
