WASHINGTON, DC-Derrick Todd threw three fourth-quarter touchdown passes but it was not enough as the Washington Warthogs held off the Sacramento Knights 28-25 in Week 3 of the CIFL season.
Sacramento opened the game with a punt, then the Warthogs would drive 83 yards on 9 plays. Archie Colvin put an end to the drive with a 4-yard touchdown run to go up 7-0 with 8:53 left in the first quarter. On the Knights' subsequent possession, Todd was picked off by Reston Hanna at the Warthogs' 41-yard line. But Marshall Graver fumbled and Nelson Task recovered for the Knights at their own 43. After a Sacramento punt, the Warthogs were on the move again, going 71 yards on 8 plays. Corliss Wardell scored on an 8-yard quarterback keeper to make it 14-0 with 26 seconds left in the first.
Punts dominated much of the second quarter, but late in the quarter Wardell was intercepted by Drew Bumpers at the Washington 38-yard line. Shane Sandlin missed a 49-yard field goal attempt with 42 seconds remaining in the half, and the teams went into the locker room with a 14-0 lead for the Warthogs.
Washington opened the second half with a 10-play, 57-yard drive. Saul St. Paul scored on a 3-yard reverse to make it 21-0 with 10:08 remaining in the third quarter. The Knights started a comeback attempt with a 5-play, 47-yard drive. Sandlin would end it with a 40-yard field goal to make it 21-3 with 6:40 left in the third. The Warthogs answered with an 8-play, 77-yard drive. Wardell finished it off with a 3-yard touchdown pass to St. Paul making it 28-3 with 2:32 left in the third quarter.
The Knights would punt, then Wardell was intercepted by Miller Lockner at the Washington 36-yard line. But Sacramento would get turned away on fourth down at the 19-yard line. Norvel Talie would have a punt blocked by Dolph Potts at the Washington 45-yard line. Seven plays later, Todd threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Chet Quince. The 2-point conversion was good and the score was 28-11 with 5:33 remaining in the fourth quarter. The onside kick failed, and Washington moved into scoring position, but Stephan Hooper missed a 41-yard field goal attempt. Sacramento then drove 69 yards on 3 plays, and Todd fired an 18-yard touchdown pass to Vito Forbis to make it 28-18 with 1:49 remaining. After another failed onside kick, the Warthogs would punt. The Knights would drive 80 yards on 6 plays, and Todd threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Tibbs making it 28-25 with 1 second left. The Knights tried one more onside kick, but the Warthogs recovered to salt the game away.
Washington (1-2) gained 409 yards of total offense. The Warthogs ran for 197 yards on 38 carries. Marshall Graver led the team with 61 yards on 11 carries. Wardell went 22-of-25 passing with 242 yards, 1 TD and 2 INT. He was sacked four times, losing 30 yards. St. Paul (44 yards, TD) and Kevin Hanan (58 yards) each caught 5 passes. Next week, the Warthogs will visit the Anaheim Splash.
Sacramento (1-2) gained 373 yards of total offense. The Knights ran for 49 yards on 12 plays. Todd led the team with 32 yards on 6 carries. He went 24-of-43 passing for 368 yards, 3 TD and 1 INT. He was sacked four times, losing 44 yards. Tibbs (71 yards, TD) and Forrest Gottfried (87 yards) each caught five passes. The Knights will open their home schedule against the Seattle Seadogs next week.
