AFL: Desperados Defeat Avengers 30-20

LOS ANGELES-Heinie Voorhees accounted for all three touchdowns in the Dallas Desperados' 30-20 victory over the Los Angeles Avengers in Week 6 of the AFL season.

It started early for Dallas, when Ardell Edmonds picked off Willie Guess and ran it back 54 yards to the Los Angeles 6-yard line on the first play of the game. On the next play, Voorhees connected with J.J. Hawes for a 6-yard touchdown pass to give the Desperados a 7-0 lead with 14:27 remaining in the first quarter. The Avengers shook off that turnover, and drove 73 yards on 8 plays. Guess would throw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Keifer Dance to tie the game at 7 with 10:45 to go in the first. After trading punts, Dallas would embark on a 14-play, 48-yard drive ending with a 32-yard field goal by Greg Hall to take a 10-7 lead with 1:25 remaining in the first quarter.

On Los Angeles' next possession, Nino Schwarz would have a punt blocked by Upton Kent who took it 12 yards to the Avengers' 6-yard line. However, Hall would later attempt a 20-yard field goal that was blocked by Claude Dyer who ran it back 39 yards to the Desperados' 47-yard line. Los Angeles would gain 16 yards on 6 plays, and Carmon Grimes kicked a 48-yard field goal to tie the game at 10 with 9:31 to go in the second quarter. Gus Wolfe would pick off a Voorhees pass at the Avengers' 40-yard line but Los Angeles was forced to punt. Following a Desperados' punt, the Avengers would drive 61 yards on 6 plays. Chip Kindrick would score on a 1-yard touchdown run giving LA a 17-10 lead with 2:28 to go in the half. Horace Evers fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and Grimes fell on it for the Avengers at the Dallas 26-yard line. After five plays netted 17 yards, Grimes would kick a 26-yard field goal with 55 seconds left to give Los Angeles a 20-10 lead at halftime.

After the Desperados punted to open the second half, they caught a break when Kindrick fumbled and Edmonds recovered at the Avengers' 41-yard line. Three plays later, Voorhees fired an 18-yard touchdown pass to Helmut Briley to make it 20-17 with 11:20 left in the third quarter. Following a Los Angeles punt, Dallas would move the ball 19 yards on 6 plays, and Hall kicked a 49-yard field goal to tie the game at 20 with 6:44 to go in the third.

After another Avengers punt, the Desperados went on a 9-play, 56-yard drive that ended with Hall kicking a 28-yard field goal to give Dallas a 23-20 at the start of the fourth quarter. Los Angeles would punt yet again, and Voorhees personally put an end to a 7-play, 80-yard drive with a 45-yard scramble for a touchdown to make it 30-20 with 6:42 left in the fourth.

Dallas (2-4) gained 292 yards of total offense. The Desperados ran for 146 yards on 34 carries. Voorhees led the team with 67 yards on 5 carries and a TD. He was 14-of-28 passing for 157 yards, 2 TD and 1 INT. He was sacked twice, losing 11 yards. Evers led with 4 receptions for 50 yards. Next week, the Desperados host the Arizona Rattlers.

Los Angeles (3-3) gained 227 yards of total offense. The Avengers ran for 140 yards on 30 carries. Igor Keough led the team with 57 yards on 6 carries. Guess was 14-of-27 passing for 120 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. He was sacked five times, losing 33 yards. Dance was the leading receiver with 8 catches for 60 yards and a TD. The Avengers visit the Iowa Barnstormers next week.
