AFL: Oliver Knows: Osler, Kats, Run Over Force 26-3

ATLANTA-Oliver Osler set a single-game AFL rushing yardage record as the Nashville Kats dominated the Georgia Force 26-3 during Week 3 of the AFL season.

Osler got the ball rolling on the first play of the game with a 51-yard gain. The run set up a touchdown pass three plays later as Curt Wardlaw hit Cobey Kingston for a 10-yard touchdown to take a 7-0 lead with 12:58 to go in the first quarter. Georgia would answer with a 6-play, 39-yard drive ending with Wilbur Ahmad drilling a 54-yard field goal to make it 7-3 with 10:01 remaining in the first. But for the Force, that was about the extent of their offense. Nashville would go on a 15-play, 69-yard drive, and Daniel Stevenson kicked a 29-yard field goal to go ahead 10-3 with 2:24 remaining in the first quarter.

The teams would trade punts going into the second quarter. Then the Kats would drive 40 yards on 8 plays, then Stevenson would kick another field goal, this one from 21 yards out, making it 13-3 with 10:11 to go in the second. After Ahmad missed a 52-yard field goal attempt, Wardlaw hit Alza Chipman for a 42-yard gain. Then after three incompletions, Stevenson would kick a 33-yard field goal to make it 16-3 with 4:12 remaining in the half. Late in the second, Gevan Crafton fumbled on a punt return, and Ray Barris recovered for Nashville at the Georgia 43-yard line. However, Stevenson would miss a 52-yard field goal attempt, and the score remained 16-3 at halftime.

Lincoln Bingham would intercept a Yannel Gansz pass in the opening of the third quarter, and return it 24 yards to the Force 15-yard line. But two plays later, Wardlaw was picked off in the end zone by Raymond Clements. The Force would punt, and Nashville drove into scoring position, but Stevenson would miss a 44-yard field goal attempt. The teams would trade punts until early in the fourth quarter, when the Kats drove 45 yards on 7 plays. Stevenson would end the drive with a 44-yard field goal to make it 19-3 with 8:29 remaining in the fourth quarter. On the ensuing kickoff, Lin Byers appeared to be sprinting for a potential touchdown when he fumbled and Henry Lockner recovered for the Kats at the Nashville 44-yard line. The Kats then wrapped up a 13-play, 56-yard drive with a 13-yard touchdown run by Osler to make it 26-3 with 3:13 left in the game.
