AFL: Avengers Blank Force, 9-0

ATLANTA-The Georgia Force had a chance to clinch the AFL Southern Division with a win, but the Los Angeles Avengers had other ideas and pitched their second straight shutout with a 9-0 win in Week 14 of the AFL season.

Georgia punted to start the game, and the Avengers would drive 59 yards on 13 plays. Carmon Grimes ended the drive with a 33-yard field goal to put Los Angeles up 3-0 with 5:18 left in the first quarter.

Both teams would trade punts until Los Angeles went on an 11-play, 61-yard drive that saw Grimes score on a 42-yard field goal to make it 6-0 with 6:12 left in the second quarter. Following another Georgia punt, the Avengers drove 54 yards on 13 plays, and Grimes kicked a 26-yard field goal with 40 seconds remaining to put Los Angeles up 9-0 at the half.

There was no scoring in the second half. Clem Wallen would snuff out a Georgia drive by intercepting a Norm Damron pass at the Avengers 48-yard line. Grimes would then miss a 20-yard field goal attempt that was partially blocked. In the fourth quarter, the Avengers picked off Damron again as Elrod Rodgers prevented a Force touchdown at the LA 3-yard line. With less than two minutes to go, Wilbur Ahamd came out to attempt a 25-yard field goal to get the Force within a touchdown, but Jimbo Glass blocked the kick and ran it back to the Georgia 49, and the Avengers then ran out the clock.

Los Angeles (5-9) gained 284 yards of total offense. The Avengers gained 92 yards rushing on 31 carries. Chip Kindrick led the team with 58 yards on 15 carries. He was also LA's leading receiver with 7 catches for 76 yards. Juan York went 21-of-33 passing for 208 yards, and was sacked twice, losing 16 yards. Next week, the Avengers host the Grand Rapids Rampage.
