AFL: Rampage Beat Storm. 30-9

TAMPA-The Grand Rapids Rampage kept the Tampa Bay Storm out of the end zone en route to defeating them 30-9 in Week 11 of the AFL season.

Tampa Bay started the game with a punt, and then Grand Rapids drove 47 yards on 10 plays. Curtis Wayne finished the drive with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Lester Gartman to give the Rampage a 7-0 lead with 8:35 left in the first quarter. The Storm would answer with an 11-play, 51-yard drive, and Johnny Quincey kicked a 39-yard field goal to make it 7-3 with 2:20 remaining in the first.

After a Rampage punt, the Storm moved the ball 60 yards on 8 plays. Quincey would kick a 49-yard field goal to close the gap to 7-6 with 11:27 remaining in the half. Both teams would trade punts, and Tampa Bay would find themselves on their own 3-yard line. Randy Dobbs would pick off Orval Stanley's pass and return it for a 7-yard touchdown to put the Rampage up 14-6 with 7:44 to go in the second quarter. After another exchange of punts, Dobbs intercepted Stanley again at the Tampa Bay 14-yard line. After three plays gained two yards, George Tibbs kicked a 29-yard field goal with 1:01 left, and the teams went into the locker room at halftime with the Rampage leading 17-6.

At the start of the second half, the Rampage drove 22 yards on 4 plays, and Tibbs kicked a 56-yard field goal with 12:44 to go in the third quarter to make it 20-6. Tampa Bay would punt on their next drive, then Tibbs had a 55-yard field goal attempt blocked. The Storm then drove 42 yards on 13 plays, and Quincey ended the drive with a 28-yard field goal to make it 20-9 with 2:01 remaining in the third quarter.

The Rampage would then put the exclamation point on the game with a 14-play, 85-yard drive. Toby Harrell finished it off with a 2-yard touchdown run to make it 27-9 with 9:41 to go in the game. Tampa Bay was turned away on fourth down on their next possession, then Grand Rapids punted. Stanley was intercepted by Rodd Clift at the Storm 46-yard line. The Rampage would then drive 38 yards on 9 plays. Tibbs finished the drive with a 25-yard field goal to make it 30-9 with 1:30 left in the game.

Grand Rapids (7-4) gained 279 yards of total offense. The Rampage ran for 163 yards on 34 carries. Harrell led the team with 75 yards on 15 carries and a TD. Wayne went 14-of-27 passing for 122 yards and a TD. He was sacked once for a 6-yard loss. Joe Foss led the receivers with 4 catches for 43 yards. The Rampage host the Georgia Force next week.

Tampa Bay (5-5-1) gained 273 yards of total offense. The Storm ran for 82 yards on 24 carries. Stanley led the team with 53 yards on 12 carries. He went 19-of-35 passing for 213 yards and 4 INT. He was sacked four times, losing 22 yards. Foster Warhurst was Tampa Bay's leading receiver with 9 catches for 75 yards. Next week, the Storm visit the Detroit Drive.
